Personal Competency: A Framework for Building Students’ Capacity to Learn

The Center on Innovations in Learning released a practice guide examining the key components of four personal competencies in detail, clarifying their interrelationships with one another and defining the specific clusters of knowledge and skills, values, attitudes, and learning habits (patterns of behavior) particular to each. The personal competencies—cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, and social/emotional skills and knowledge—can be enhanced through instruction and by example, as part of the academic curriculum, in extracurricular programs, and through engagement of families.
