Focusing Formative Assessment on the Needs of English Language Learners

WestEd released a paper examining how formative assessment can enhance the teaching and learning of ELL students. The authors highlight the opportunities and challenges inherent in integrating formative assessment into instruction for ELL students in the era of the Common Core and other “next generation” standards. They argue that in order to use formative assessment effectively with this student population, teachers must attend simultaneously to the students’ needs in learning content and skills and in developing the English language skills required to express their learning.
